Happy (Belated) Veteran's Day!

How do you choose to honor them?ROTC members running American & POW-MIA flags

As I was walking across the Oval to class last Thursday, I slowed for a moment to see what the commotion was, spying a crowd of uniformed people as well as several tents and flags in front of Bricker Hall. As it turns out, the OSU ROTC was holding their annual Memorial Rock Ceremony and Veteran's Day Silent Run, something that they do each year to remember the 900+ OSU alumni who have lost their lives fighting for our country. Cadets switched in and out, running the American flag and a POW-MIA flag around the Oval (pictured above) from 6am until 6pm that evening.

Another cool event that happened this weekend included the Mens' and Women's Basketball games on Friday. Both games were played on the deck of the USS Yorktown, a U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier, in honor of Veteran's Day.

I thought that these were a awesome reminders before Veteran's Day weekend to see these men and women honoring those who have served, and it helped remind me to remember that Veteran's Day is so much more than just a long weekend or day off of classes. I think that even though Veteran's Day has come and gone this year, it's important to remember the sacrifices that people have made in order to keep this nation great. Several of my own family members are veterans of the Marines, Army, and Navy, and I'm sure you also know friends or family who have served - this week, take a moment to thank them for their service. They definitely deserve it.

College Survival Tips - Part 1 (Classes)

As newly graduated high school seniors start to get ready for their freshman year of college, making their lists of dorm necessities, getting new clothes, and scheduling classes, it’s important to keep in mind that college is a lot different than high school. While I was waiting to talk to an adviser one day, I picked up a sheet called “College Survival Tips from Successful Students”. I thought I’d share it with you here, as well as add some comments (in purple) from one more successful (so far) college student – yours truly! :)
Here is some advice regarding classes.

CLASSES
  • Go to classes. It helps. Go even if somebody says it’s a blowoff class. Agreed. You never know when the professor is going to spring some news onto the class, announce a project, or tell you some important info that is sure to be on the Midterm/Final. I’m not saying you can’t skip one here or there, but definitely don’t make it a habit. It only hurts you in the end!
  • Don’t try to write down every word the professor says. It is sometimes better to concentrate on listening to what they say and to write down the key points. A tape recorder might help. If you try to write down every word, you’re going to explode! I mean, seriously, good luck. Definitely hone the skills of picking out key points, which will typically be what the professor writes on the board, goes on and on about, emphasizes, or flat out says will be on the test. Make sure you get the main ideas of lectures, important vocab, and any formulas, details, or certain info that you feel will be important.
  • Don’t be intimidated by the class. Don’t be afraid to ask questions in fear of looking stupid – other students are probably in the same boat. I struggle with this myself – as someone who tends to be shy in classes, I find it difficult to ask a question if no one else seems to be confused or unclear. But the funny thing is, usually there are a lot of others who breathe a collective sigh of relief when someone asks the question that’s on everyone’s minds. And if you’re confused, it’s always worth the slight embarrassment you might feel asking a question – rather that than not knowing the info when a professor asks or it’s on a test!
  • Don’t be intimidated by professors. It may be scary the first time you call your professor in their office or at home, but most will take the time to help. In most cases, the professors are there to help YOU. Going to office hours can only help you understand, not to mention, forming good relationships with professors will help you uncover interests, have someone to work under in the future, and give you killer recommendations when you need them!
  • Don’t drop a course at the first sign of trouble. Ask the professor to help or to recommend a tutor. At OSU, you have 3 weeks to drop without any academic repercussions. So if on the first day of class you feel lost and distraught, don’t stress too much! Start talking to your TA or professor, going to office hours if you are struggling at first, and there are always tutors (even free ones!) you can get into contact with
  • Learn to write well. Even if you don’t have all the information, you may get some credit on an exam if you make yourself clear. Writing is essential in college. Maybe in high school you got by winging essays and slacking on research, but for the most part, your writing is what your professor knows of you, especially in larger classes. So make it good! It’s a skill you will need for a lifetime. If you aren’t the strongest writer, make use of the Writing Center on campus. It’s free and they’re there to help! I believe there is a location in Mendenhall Lab and Thompson Library. If it’s a foreign language, there’s also a writing center in Hagerty Hall that deals with foreign language papers.

Stay Tuned for Part 2!

Sometimes, life is just plain stressful...

I think I might qualify for suffering a mental breakdown. But then, I guess every college student does now and again.

It’s April 16th. The Sun is shining, the breeze is blowing (maybe a little too powerfully I might add), and the Ohio State campus is as beautiful as ever. I just got back from a trip to Toronto, Canada (which I’ll be sure to tell you all about). I got a 98% on my Spanish quiz, and my professor told me that I could turn in an assignment late since I was gone in Canada for four days. Not to mention, I managed to both take a shower AND put on makeup this morning before class.

So what, you say, is the problem? Well, that’s a pretty good question actually. It just seems that every once in a while, every college student just. breaks. down. Maybe it’s lack of sleep, maybe it’s too many assignments, and for many, it’s Finals Week or Midterms time, but I am convinced that college students, despite our best efforts to demonstrate otherwise, are just big babies whose only desire sometimes is to sleep, eat, and cry.

For my roommate, that time is on Math Homework Wednesday or Finals Week. For my boyfriend, that time was just a couple weeks ago after returning from spring break. For one of my best friends on campus, that time was last week. And for me, that time is now.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot that has been going right in the past couple weeks. There just has also been a lot of stuff going, well, wrong. Last week was the week that never ended. I felt stressed beyond belief, had a hard time finding time to eat let alone sleep, and had a gazillion tests, quizzes, and important assignments that needed to get done.

And that baasically ended in me crying into my boyfriend’s shirt and my friends’ ears nearly every night, feeling like nothing could go my way. I didn’t even have spare time enough to call my parents, when honestly that’s really all I wanted to do. Because let me tell you, in all seriousness, when us college kids get upset, this is precisely what we turn into:

Because sometimes you just need mommy and daddy to tell you that you still have someone who believes in you.
But, as things go, I ended up having to leave a stress-torn week not with the promise of sleeping in and munching popcorn in front of sappy movies, but with instead missing classes and having to get packed to leave the country. It was a fun-filled weekend that I won’t soon forget, but it was definitely hard to come back and dive right in to the stresses of the week running on little sleep and lack of patience. Today’s list?
  1. Woke up later than I had planned
  2. Found out we had to rewrite an essay by Spanish class today, emailed my teacher to ask for an extension since I had been out of the country, didn’t hear back, wrote the entire essay over again instead of working on my speaking project for class today, and at the last minute received an email from my professor saying that I could turn it in Wednesday >:(
  3. Rushed late to my first class of the week
  4. Didn’t pay attention in that class at all, but instead rushed to jot down my speech for Spanish
  5. Completely choked on my Spanish presentation once I got to the last sentences
  6. Struggled to get to bio lecture on time, forgot my response clicker
  7. Practically ran back to my dorm to grab it and panted while booking it back to class. In my black jacket. In the outside heat.
  8. Was gross and sweaty upon my return, started crying a tad. Melodramatic, I know.
  9. Got like 3 of the bio questions wrong anyways.
  10. Felt completely and totally stressed, got angry with my boyfriend, plopped myself face-down on the grass next to Thompson Library and didn’t move a single muscle for at least 10 minutes.
Now, before you go thinking I’m completely off my rocker, cut me a little slack. I’ve got about 10 applications that I’ve finished/still have to finish within a span of about 3 weeks. Not to mention, Midterms and Exams this week as well as interviews for the applications that I have already submitted. And all I want to do is curl up and sleep for ages.

Sometimes, life is stressful. But life’s a funny thing. You won’t ever be faced with anything you can’t handle, and that’s an awesome thing to trust in. A big thank you to the YWAM group on the Oval today…they were really a blessing that I so needed. So, next time you’re feeling stressed. Go grab a jar of Nutella (shout out to my roommie!). Pull up Spotify and put on a playlist of some really relaxing songs that clear the mess in your head. Take a few moments to just breathe, fresh air if at all possible. Say a prayer, meditate, write or sing or jam out or take a really long shower or go to the RPAC hot tub or go work out the stress…whatever works for you. Remember that life can be funny, and it can really seem like it’s out to get you sometimes, but just keep saying to yourself that this too shall pass. :)
Peace. ☮

Meet my Abnormal Psych friends!

Obviously I’ve nearly fried my brain studying for Finals the past few days…

Hey there! I’d like to introduce you to my new friend group, called the PDs!
They’re a pretty motley crew, and boy do they have some issues going on amongst the nine of them.
As with any clique, there are a few little groups within the PDs. They like to call themselves the A-Team, B-Team, and C-Team.

In the A-Team, we have Paranoid Pete, who doesn't trust anybody. He's always suspicious of his friends whenever things happen to him that he can't explain, and feels as though all of them are deceiving him. Even though he's a part of the group, he's very reluctant to tell anything personal or divulge any secrets, and doubts his friends' loyalty. Even when it's his fault that something went wrong, he suspects and blames the other members of the PDs.

There's also Schizoid Scott, who is one pretty lonely fellow. Scott doesn’t say much, doesn’t much care for anyone else in the PDs, and is pretty detached from the group. He rarely goes out with them, and doesn’t care that most of the others in the group aren’t inviting him to things anymore. He’d rather sit at home and read or go on walks by himself deep in the woods, even though none of the activities he does bring him much pleasure.

Scott’s closest “friend” in the group, although they rarely talk, is Schizotypal Scooter. Scott doesn’t mind Scooter because she has a lot of social deficits and doesn’t quite fit in with the group because of her odd speech and behavior. She also has some very strange thoughts, suspicious beliefs, and tends to react to situations abnormally, like when she couldn’t stop laughing at their teacher’s funeral. Scooter’s psychologist thinks she may develop schizophrenia within the next few years.

The B-Team makes up the leaders of the PDs. They are the biggest personalities, and there are the most of them as well. Antisocial Alec is undoubtedly a leader based out of fear, because he is a deviant boy who doesn’t care about the rights of others and frequently does impulsive thing without remorse or guilt. His parents are even frightened of Alec and are disappointed by his responsibility and multiple run-ins with the local authorities. Once, he even tried to set fire to the school; yet the teachers and everyone who meets him tend to like Alec because of his initially charming attitude.

Borderline Bob has a very dramatic outlook on things, and has difficulties relating with the others in the group. He tends to see people and situations as either very good or very bad, with little leeway in between. Not to mention, his views can change rapidly, so many of the group members have been looked up to one day and then trashed the next by Bob. He is also quite depressed, and everyone in the PDs pretends to ignore the scars running down his arms and legs, just as they never brought it up when the police had to be called during a sleepover because Bob had swallowed a bottle of pills. Luckily, he lived, and now faces an intense fear of separation, but gets really pissed as soon as he is reunited with whoever he lost.

Another member of the B-Team is Histrionic Helen. She and Bob have a lot in common, but Helen has much better relationships than Bob. She is the attention-seeker of the group, who always wants to be noticed and gets frustrated if the attention is not on her. Because of this, she exaggerates aspects of her personality, including her emotions, which tend to be very shallow. Helen has been known to feign illness before and stay home from school just because her mother wasn’t paying enough attention to her.

Rounding out the B-team is Narcissistic Nathan, and between he and Helen there is enough self-importance for the entire group! Nathan often fights Helen for the admiration of the PDs, and will exaggerate his own importance to do so. He frequently sidles up to one group member or another whenever he needs them for his own benefit, uses them, and then moves on to the next person who can help him achieve his goals. When someone says that they don’t like him, he doesn’t understand the concept because he expects to be liked by everyone.

Next up, meet the C-team, arguably the most sensitive and commonly used members of the group. Avoidant Amy is insanely aware of what others think of her, and often times this leaves her feeling inadequate and anxious. Whenever somebody says something not kind about Amy, she can cry for hours on end, even if it is as simple as a comment about how her shoes don’t match her outfit. the other PDs think she may have Social Phobia because of how much inhibition she displays even among their friend group.

Another PD is Dependent Dori, who is rarely seen without her boyfriend Dane. She barely knows what to do when he’s not there, and always needs others to help her make decisions and take care of her. Even though she is a smart girl, Dori doubts her intelligence and abilities and often has others help her with homework and projects, relying on their knowledge. Although she is intensely afraid of being separated from Dane, he is a very abusive boyfriend who tends to take advantage of her and occasionally hit her when he’s annoyed. Yet she can’t be without him and clings to his verbally and physically abusive presence in her life regardless.

The last member of the PDs I’d like you to meet is Obsessive-Compulsive Olivia. Olivia is quite the perfectionist who is preoccupied by details and almost always acts as the planner and organizer of the group. She doesn’t like letting go of control, and can be very stubborn and unwilling to change once she has something set in her mind. She gets often caught up in the rules and fine print of everything, and can be a workaholic when it comes to her job and school, making it hard for her to make time to spend with her other PD friends.

There they are, the whole PD gang! Now let’s hope that they help me remember my Personality Disorders on tomorrow’s Abnormal Psychology final…
  • Cluster A Disorders: Schizoid, Schizotypal
  • Cluster B Disorders: Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, Narcissistic
  • Cluster C Disorders: Avoidant, Dependent, Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD)
Yes, I’ve reached that point…but my tip for Finals week is to find a way that helps YOU remember, in a way that works for YOU! That may or may not involve making up fictitious characters and creating a storyline for your Abnormal Psych disorders, but there’s a method for everyone…you’ve just gotta find it! :)

***BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE ON FINALS!***

Song of the day: Sonata Pathetique
Why: Because classical music helps me focus!

Wait...it's finals time already?!?

Today is Thursday of Week 10, meaning that my last class of the quarter is tomorrow afternoon. The weirdest thing is, I have absolutely no idea where the time has gone! It feels as though Winter Quarter just started, and to think that we're more than a week into March is also mind-boggling to me. So used am I to my Cleveland weather with foot upon foot of snow and constant freezing wind and ice, I guess it just hasn't registered that it has been winter with only a few short-lived dustings of the powdery white stuff!

I have been keeping myself busy with all of my classes, but thankfully it seems as though it will definitely pay off. Last quarter, math ate up my GPA and spit it back out, leaving me feeling as though I got punched in the stomach. Let's just say...math and I don't get along very well. As in, this pretty much summarizes our relationship:

Okay, well maybe I'm not THAT bad. But me on math probably looks more like this.....:

And about that, I'm not sure I'm exaggerating that much. Seriously.

Anyways! Last quarter was not exactly up par with my standard performance, so that basically meant that I've had to work harder this quarter to do as well as possible in all of my classes and give my GPA a much-needed boost. Fortunately, I've been able to do so while still keeping up with some cool things outside of class, and from the looks of it I'll be getting A's in all my classes! And that sure makes a worried, nerdy girl very happy :)

Other than (hopefully) acing classes (fingers crossed), I've been given some awesome opportunities over the last quarter that I'm super excited to share! One of these amazing opportunities is Buckeyethon!!!

For those who have never heard of it, Buckeyethon is  a 12-hour dance marathon at OSU whose goal is raising funds for pediatric cancer treatment at Nationwide Children's Hospital. And yes, you read that right - it's a 12 HOUR LONG dance marathon! In the contract, it even says that you are supposed to stay on your feet...so no sitting for 12 hours! Hundreds of teams form to dance the whole night away and even meet with some of the children we're helping. All of the proceeds benefit cancer research at the Hematology and Oncology Units of Nationwide Children's Hospital.

And it was definitely one of the best experiences I've had at Ohio State! It was incredibly inspirational to see these kids who just have an incredible amount of strength. It's hard for me to even fathom! When my feet and legs began hurting after about the fourth hour, they reminded us to stay strong for these precious children who have to have the strength to withstand the attacks cancer and chemotherapy put their bodies under.

I definitely plan on participating again next year, and am hoping to get involved with being on the steering committee or a Morale Captain (who help your team stay motivated and moving all night!). it's an excellent cause that I'd love to support. I was born healthy, thankfully and gratefully, so why not help out those kids who weren't able to live their childhoods out to the fullest? Every kid deserves the chance to just...be a kid.

While I've gotta get back to studying for Finals and doing some end-of-the-quarter homework, check out just a few pictures from the memorable night below!

Color teams coming together in the Union Hall to meet
some of the kids we are helping and their families.

A very blurry picture, but one that I feel sort of encapsulates the
energy and vibe of Buckeyethon. Brutus the Buckeye cheers us on!

One of my best friends and me taking a jumping shot in the break room.
We were both proud to be on the Purple team...PURPLE NURPLE!

THE FINAL TOTAL REVEALED!!! We more than doubled last year's
fundraising total, and raised almost half a million dollars!

Until next time,

Cassie :)
